tony self

Believe it or not, Tony Self has been playing the guitar for almost 20 years.  He was 16 when he played his first gig at Fitzgerald’s in the Houston Heights with his first band, Likely Story.  Since that time, he’s played countless gigs in Houston with bands of almost every style.

At the ripe old age of 18, Tony began playing one or two shows a week with Spare Parts, first playing the bass and later moving to the guitar.  Spare Parts did, and still does, cover just about every style of music you can imagine.

At 21 years-old, Tony began playing with B.B. King’s former pianist Eugene Carrier in a blues and R&B group called The Party Machine.  Along with the usual club gigs, this group played a 2-month stint at Houston’s “The Blue Monkey” and also played several blues festivals including one at Rice Stadium.

Today, Tony is still playing with Likely Story.  This band also features the band’s original drummer Ethan Cunningham along with vocalist George Bryant and bassist David Obert.  Ethan and Tony have been playing together since they were 12 years-old.  George joined them about 10 years ago, and David joined the band in 2006.

On the nights when Likely Story isn’t playing, Tony is playing with Just Got Lucky.  JGL has been shaking out the blues and southern rock for about 10 years, and this is Tony’s second stint with the group.
